Black Farmer Fund seeks a full-time Business Support Director to develop the “Technical Assistance (TA)” or business development support offerings at the organization. The primary responsibilities include being the main point of contact for current portfolio businesses, providing 1-1 business development support to investees, and supporting them in their business challenges by identifying holistic solutions and coordinating consultants to provide the technical expertise that our investees seek.

This is a remote, full-time position requiring 10-15% travel for in-person events and workshops. This position may require work outside of standard business hours. The ideal candidate must reside in the Northeast with a preference for applicants residing in the NYC metro area.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Business Development Support – 50%

  • Strategize and make recommendations, setting financial goals, business planning and growth strategies that identify long term funding needs for potential and current investees
  • Report crises and hardships experienced by investees and coordinate support as necessary
  • Participate in relationship building through planned site visits
  • Work 1-1 with entrepreneur(s) to identify learning goals for each business, and what additional service providers would be supportive
  • Serve as a connector between businesses and Technical Assistance (TA) service providers; ensuring timely delivery of business assistance services that meets objectives and deliverables, and reporting on results.
  • Develop strategy to support businesses that are values aligned, but not “investment ready” and need support with building out plan for scalability and growth

Investment Team TA Reporting – 20%

  • Work alongside Investment Team to support investees with developing a TA plan and financial plan for grant/loan spending, including assessing Return of Investment of intended activities
  • Conduct quarterly report backs/check-ins with Investment Team on progress of investees
  • Support the Investment Team with reviewing incoming applications for businesses seeking funding as needed; provide agricultural expertise/perspective as relevant

Office and Project Management – 30%

  • Manage and track TA budget
  • Lead the development of a directory of BIPOC TA service providers with expertise in relevant topics of agribusiness operations, marketing and financial management
  • Curate list of additional funding opportunities specific to agriculture that investees may be eligible for; support with applications as needed
  • Develop business strategy resources to share with borrowers and broader network on successful farm/food business models
  • Support development and fundraising of holistic TA service incubator in coordination with Ecosystem partners

SKILLS
BFF seeks candidates that exhibit both mission alignment and professional competency in the following areas:

  • The ability to work with diverse groups of people, including partner organizations.
  • Demonstrated interest in and understanding of economic justice, integrated capital models, non-extractive capital, sustainability, and/or related topics
  • Ability to “think outside the corporate box” when researching, designing, and implementing business issue solutions/processes for small scale farm and food businesses
  • Excellent skills in quantitative and qualitative analysis, problem solving and general critical thinking
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong team/discussion facilitation skills
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently
  • Resourceful, proactive, able to prioritize and navigate in a fast-paced team-oriented environment
  • Understanding of the historical context of racial injustice in the US, particularly in the agricultural landscape

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 7-10 years of experience providing business development support to food and agriculture related businesses; understanding the lived realities of rural communities/business structures, related technical/technological limitations, seasonal impacts on work and communication flows
  • Demonstrated experience  identifying and procuring TA service providers for financial, marketing and legal needs for diversified small farmers and or food businesses or previous business management of a farm or food business
  • Demonstrated experience providing business coaching virtually, navigating Zoom, and working in a remote setting
  • Demonstrated experience providing support with building business plans and models for non-traditional farm and food business.
  • Experience serving as a “case manager” or “focal point” for individuals requiring support + consistent follow-up
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks with multiple business and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organization, attention to detail and follow-through
  • Unquestioned ability to handle confidential information in a professional manner
