About this Role
The Senior Director of NY Ventures will oversee the strategic scaling and execution of New York State’s venture fund partnerships, including the Emerging and Regional Manager and Community Partner funds. This role requires directing the recruitment and management of fund partners to expand capital access for entrepreneurs across the state. Working under the leadership of the Managing Director of NY Ventures, the Senior Director will collaborate with an integrated team to provide investment reporting and foster cross-agency collaboration. Additionally, the role involves developing future initiatives to drive New York’s high-growth innovation economy. A critical aspect of the position will be managing the Emerging and Regional Manager and Community Partner programs, which are designed to address venture capital access gaps for innovative start-up companies across New York State. Funded with $144 million from the State Small Business Credit Initiative, these programs aim to fuel high-growth potential across diverse industry sectors. NY Ventures, a division of Empire State Development, manages over $300 million in funds for startups and fund of funds programs, fueling innovation and startup growth across strategic sectors in New York. The team’s mission is to drive long-term economic progress through venture capital investing.
Responsibilities
- Lead the recruitment, identification, and selection of investment funds, including the diligence process.
- Cultivate and manage relationships with industry partners to expand the application pipeline for multi-fund programs.
- Oversee day-to-day operations and relationships with fund managers.
- Coordinate with legal counsel to secure Limited Partner Agreements for new investment funds.
- Develop, monitor, and report program outcomes to stakeholders, including US Treasury reports.
- Represent ESD and NY Ventures at conferences, meetings, and in discussions to raise awareness of NY Ventures programs.
- Travel an average of 30% of the time, primarily within the state.
- Collaborate effectively with ESD and state colleagues to support NY Ventures’ development initiatives.
Requirements
- Graduate degree in business administration, public policy, urban planning, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in venture or investment fund administration and management.
- Knowledge of venture capital fund operations and high-growth innovation programs.
- Strong program management, research, writing, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency with venture capital specific programs like Carta and Pitchbook.
- Understanding of policies regarding economic development and innovation communities.
