About the fund

The GGC capitalization pool was assembled between 2021 and 2024 as the founding equity base of the Green Guarantee Company, structured as a blended finance vehicle combining multilateral climate finance, bilateral development finance, and sovereign wealth capital. The pool's purpose is to underpin GGC's BBB/Stable Fitch rating, which in turn allows GGC to provide full investment-grade guarantees to climate bond and loan issuers in developing countries that would otherwise be unable to access global institutional capital markets. GGC leverages the initial $100M from these investors to provide up to $1B of guarantees, with a long-term target of $5B+ in guarantee capacity by 2035, expected to unlock $10B in climate capital over ten years. The Green Climate Fund is the founding and anchor equity shareholder, with a total approved commitment of up to $82.5M deployed in tranches as GGC scales — the first tranche being $40.5M, approved at GCF's 34th Board meeting in Songdo, South Korea, with MUFG Bank serving as Accredited Entity. The pool is structured to generate leverage through guarantee issuance rather than direct investment returns, with the financial additionality of each dollar of equity capital amplified many times through the global capital markets.
