First beef, then poultry, now fish.

Lab-grown meat startups haven’t yet put any products on the market, but the spectrum of products in development is diversifying. The latest example is Finless Foods, which has raised $3.5 million for its bluefin tuna product.

The company says the funding will get it through the R&D phase and closer to a target launch in 2019. Draper Associates led the round, and with participation from 10 other investors, including Softmatter, Blue Horizon, Babel Ventures, Yakumi Investment and Olive Tree Capital.

  • Other lab-meat companies… Finless Food’s “clean meat” mission is shared by other startups like Wild Type, which is making lab-grown salmon, Memphis Meats, SuperMeat, and Future Meat.
  • Prior funding… Finless Foods has been backed by aquaculture accelerator Hatch and Italy’s Hi-Food.
