ImpactAlpha, August 25 – Checkerspot is working on a range of sustainable industrial and commercial building materials that aren’t petroleum-dependent. The Berkeley, Calif.-based company, launched four years ago, has brought to market three materials derived from microalgae, including one used to make commercial skis, manufactured with recycled plastic.

Its $36 million Series B round was backed by Viking Global Investors, Builders VC, Breakout Ventures and Cavallo Ventures.
