The brain economy’s missing infrastructure

Preliminary figures shared by the McKinsey Health Institute at the recent Brain Economy Summit in Houston value collective US brain capital investments at $2.6 trillion. This figure reflects the extensive resources poured into cognitive, emotional and psychological assets through workforce initiatives, education and healthcare. Yet, the most significant driver of real outcomes—how we feel and therefore how well we perform—is missing an unbiased data layer. As a result, health systems, enterprises, academic institutions and the impact investors funding innovation are taking on unpriced systemic risk.

Consider the daily reality of an executive operating under unmanaged distress. They show up to work. They log their hours. But beneath the surface, elevated autonomic stress impairs executive function, shrinks working memory and degrades high-stakes decision-making. The root cause of this performance drag, how we feel, is not being measured accurately, since we currently rely on subjective reporting instead of physiological reality.

When left unmeasured and unmanaged, short-term affective dysregulation compounds into long-term neurobiological damage. The epidemiological evidence is stark: major depressive disorder doubles to quadruples the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and late-life dementia. What begins as daily, unquantified emotional noise ends as catastrophic cognitive decline, imposing an unchecked burden on healthcare infrastructure and the global brain economy.

Pioneering organizations like Entrelacs and Holmusk use AI to create dynamic self-reports that improve accuracy or explore massive datasets to extract individual meaning. A complementary approach — and the one I have pursued for a decade — aims to directly measure how we feel without bias by making sense of our peripheral physiology.

As the CEO and Chief Scientist of Mobio Interactive, my mission focuses on building what I view as the essential data layer to safeguard and optimize global brain capital at scale. As a first step, Mobio has developed and validated an unbiased measure of psychological stress based on neuro-biometrics captured through smartphones. In time, we are confident we can accurately measure the full spectrum of human emotional states without bias — all from a selfie video that works immediately on everyone, regardless of age, gender, skin tone, geographical location, socioeconomic status or trauma experience.

Beyond subjective bias

To manage an asset as vital as global brain capital, I believe measurement tools must transition toward unbiased empirical data. Fortunately, despite the contentious role of smartphones in mental health, mobile front-facing cameras have unlocked the potential to analyze facial blood flow dynamics and subtle microexpressions in real time. When these biometrics are processed by deep neural networks robustly trained on highly diverse datasets, Mobio has shown we can accurately assess psychological brain states without bias and at unprecedented scale.

Building on this foundation, a prospective real-world study demonstrated that unbiased stress signals provide a structurally superior data signal for training therapy recommendation algorithms compared to traditional “in the moment” self-reporting (known as ecological momentary assessment).

The next priority is establishing how far the benefits of using unbiased data signals generalize across broader treatment paradigms, inform preventative strategies and help guide investment aimed toward the global brain economy.

Scaling interoceptive alignment

The five-day data challenge architecture:

  • Routine Capture: Over five days, participants complete up to three 30-second mobile selfie scans daily.
  • Dual-Layer Analytics: Deep neural networks process physiological metrics while participants complete rapid, subjective check-ins regarding mood and affect, bridging the subjective-objective gap.
  • Personalized Diagnostics: At the conclusion of the challenge, the platform compiles a longitudinal data asset mapping the precise visual delta between an individual’s psychological estimations and their unbiased autonomic baseline.

Guiding individuals to reconcile perceived emotional stress with actual autonomic activity creates more than a data layer for the brain economy; it also systematically retrains the central nervous system to process internal signaling proactively, shifting the body out of chronic survival mechanisms. Thus, measuring how we feel without bias not only helps investors better allocate resources, it also helps individuals increase resilience during a global mental health crisis.

Adoption of this technology is already enhancing the efficacy of scalable psychotherapy that directly impacts the brain, helping downregulate the default mode network and stabilize autonomic nervous system responses, while laying the groundwork for true human flourishing within a thriving brain economy.
