About this Role

The Managing Director of Investments at The David and Lucile Packard Foundation plays a pivotal leadership role within the Investments team. Responsible for steering the strategy for Private Equity, with an increased focus on Venture Capital and Growth Equity, the Managing Director works closely with the Chief Investment Officer and other members of the investment team. This role necessitates engagement in industry research, attending conferences, and sourcing new investment opportunities. The incumbent will serve as a primary liaison for the foundation’s venture and growth equity engagements. Additionally, this position involves mentoring junior staff and collaborating across all investment portfolios, thereby strengthening the foundation’s financial sustainability and capacity to support its charitable missions.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Foundation’s Chief Investment Officer to set and implement the portfolio strategy.
  • Source, evaluate, and lead Venture and Growth investments; contribute to Private Equity investments.
  • Analyze and synthesize data on specific managers and overall portfolio, articulating key findings and trends.
  • Develop and maintain key relationships with fund managers and peer institutions.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all Venture and Growth Equity relationships.
  • Collaborate with other investment professionals on all areas of the Foundation’s portfolio.
  • Teach and mentor junior staff.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in investment management within an Endowment or Foundation, or at a sophisticated family office, fund of funds, OCIO, or in Venture Capital or Private Equity.
  • Significant experience in Venture Capital, Growth Equity, and Private Equity investments.
  • Broad network of investment professionals with robust relationship-building skills.
  • Experience in managing and coaching direct reports.
  • Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to multi-task and work independently or in a team.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and detail-oriented skills.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Competency in Microsoft Excel or similar tools for data analysis.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Able to travel up to 30% of the time.
