Maine Development Foundation (MDF) is a non-partisan, statewide organization established by statute in 1978 to stimulate economic growth in Maine. As a key driver for sustainable economic and community development, MDF collaborates with over 200 members, including individuals, corporations, non-profits, and government agencies across the state. The organization is known for its impactful programs like the Maine Downtown Center, Leadership Maine, and the Forest Opportunity Roadmap (FOR/Maine). MDF operates with a budget of nearly $4 million and focuses on research, leadership development, and fostering partnerships to spark new ideas and solve problems effectively.
About this Role
The Director of Finance at Maine Development Foundation will serve as a strategic, inclusive, and collaborative leader, vital to driving the organization’s financial performance and integrity. This position involves joining a dedicated team passionate about positively impacting Maine’s economy and communities. In this role, the Director will manage and direct various financial operations, providing strategic recommendations to the senior leadership team. The successful candidate will oversee the Treasury, Cash Management, and all accounting operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP and other regulatory requirements. This position offers a tremendous opportunity to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a well-respected organization. The Director of Finance will work remotely, with occasional in-person meetings across the state.
Responsibilities
- Oversee Treasury, Cash Management, and Liquidity.
- Manage all accounting operations, including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, and Revenue Recognition.
- Prepare, analyze, and present accurate financial reporting, ensuring compliance with GAAP.
- Direct the budget process and report variances and financial performance.
- Conduct in-depth financial analysis to support decision-making.
- Oversee risk management and all insurance programs.
- Calculate and track depreciation.
- Identify areas for cost optimization and revenue growth.
- Manage the annual financial audit, 990, and single federal audit.
- Design, implement, and maintain internal controls compliance.
- Oversee technology management.
- Assist with grant management, accounting, and reporting.
- Assist with payroll management and benefits administration.
- Supervise the finance assistant.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- At least five years of professional experience in finance.
- Experience in a non-profit environment and grant accounting.
- Advanced Excel skills.
