ImpactAlpha, April 16 – Oakland, California-based BookNook makes a digital tool that helps teachers give reading instruction to small groups of children. The firm says its tool is used in 110 school and nonprofits sites in 14 states. The new funding will be used to expand its library of 410 books and hire more employees.

  • Unusual approach… Rather than use formulaic assessments to check that students understand what they’ve read, BookNook allows teachers to record qualitative information on fluency, such as whether students pause for punctuation or read in a set, repeating pattern.
  • The funding round… was led by Better Ventures and the Urban Innovation Fund, and included Reach Capital, Impact Engine, Kapor Capital, Redhouse Education and Edovate Capital.
  • Total funding… for BookNook has reached $3.1 million since last June.
