About this Role

Black Farmer Fund is seeking a full-time Impact Lending and Relationship Associate to support our investment portfolio dedicated to Black farmers and food system entrepreneurs. This position involves engaging deeply with investees and stakeholders, combining rigorous credit underwriting with the ability to manage flexible capital. The role is pivotal in evaluating investment opportunities, structuring repayment terms as per cash flow, and collaborating with internal teams to align assistance and ecosystem support. You will report to the Investment Director and must be comfortable with autonomy while promoting a collaborative working environment. The position requires communication and representation of the organization in various public engagements. This role is ideal for professionals wanting to contribute to an equitable and climate-resilient food system through ethical investing.

Responsibilities

  • Source, evaluate, and structure impact-aligned investments supporting Black farmers and food system enterprises.
  • Assess investee readiness for debt using equitable evaluation methods.
  • Conduct preliminary assessments and develop recommendations for investment-ready applicants.
  • Lead financial and operational due diligence, analyzing statements, credit risk, and business fundamentals.
  • Structure loans and integrated capital packages with flexible repayment terms aligned with enterprise growth.
  • Coordinate and conduct site visits to inform investment decisions and understand enterprise operations.
  • Maintain relationships with investees, supporting technical assistance needs and organizing due diligence information.
  • Ensure accurate system and file management for all investments.
  • Support portfolio management, impact data collection, and performance tracking.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of professional experience in credit underwriting in environments like small business lending, CDFIs, or impact investing funds.
  • Experience with screening and evaluating applicants for credit readiness, evaluating borrower financial statements, and providing 1:1 borrower support.
  • Proven experience managing an active loan or investment portfolio.
  • Experience in agriculture, food systems, or natural resource–based enterprises is highly valued.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple investments simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and follow-through.
