About this Role

The Schmidt Family Foundation’s Impact Investing Program seeks a dynamic Portfolio Manager to drive impactful investments that align with the Foundation’s grant-making endeavors, particularly in areas such as sustainable agriculture, energy, human rights, and marine conservation. The individual will work closely with a passionate team to develop and refine investment strategies, focusing on materials innovation including alternatives to plastics, circular economy models, and textiles. The Portfolio Manager will be responsible for identifying potential investments, conducting thorough due diligence, managing cash flows, and ensuring comprehensive reporting to stakeholders. They will also play a pivotal role in crafting creative capital solutions, building external relationships, and contributing to the Foundation’s overall impact strategy. A collaborative spirit and adaptability to evolving responsibilities are key attributes for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and refine strategy for a materials-focused investment portfolio.
  • Source, review, and evaluate potential investment opportunities.
  • Conduct due diligence and financial risk assessments.
  • Manage the investment process from origination to post-investment support.
  • Oversee portfolio cash flows and risk-adjusted financial returns.
  • Foster relationships within the materials, packaging, and textiles fields.
  • Craft creative capital solutions to meet the needs of founders.
  • Recommend investments to the Investment Committee.
  • Author investment memos and perform detailed company and industry research.
  • Collaborate with the grant-making team to align strategies.
  • Provide post-investment support to portfolio companies as needed.
  • Assist with special projects and new initiatives within the Impact Investing program.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in direct investing or related fields.
  • Expertise in alternatives to plastics, advanced materials, or circular economy.
  • Strong financial and analytical skills with modeling experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaborative team culture.
  • Excellent research and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of due diligence and investment performance monitoring.
  • Commitment to social impact and supporting underrepresented communities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • A high degree of honesty and integrity.
  • Relevant degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or equivalent experience.
