Taiwanese startup The News Lens has raised new funds to take on the Asia media establishment.

The digital publication targets younger, educated audiences disillusioned with Asia’s tabloid-driven, traditional media outlets.

The site has grown to more than five million monthly visitors since 2013 and includes editions for Hong Kong and international readers and has plans for business, women’s issues, lifestyle and travel sites.

Wiskey Capital, with offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and Taipei, led the new financing round, which the startup said totaled more than $2 million.

Returning investor North Base Media — started by Sasa Vucinic, founder of Media Development Investment Fund and Marcus Brauchli, former editor of the Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal — added to its stake.

The News Lens hopes lifestyle news may help it enter the mainland China market.
