MacArthur Foundation picks eight semifinalists for $100 million prize

The MacArthur Foundation has selected eight semifinalists for its $100 million prize.

The contenders for the foundation’s “100&Change” competition include Catholic Relief Services for orphan care; HarvestPlus for crop fortification in Africa; the Human Diagnosis Project for medical care to the underserved in the U.S.; Internet Archive for its free digital library; Rice University for newborn care in Africa; the Sesame Workshop and International Rescue Committee for refugee education; and the Carter Center for its river blindness initiative.

The winner, to be announced in December, will receive $100 million over six years.
