Data.world has raised $18.7 million to build a data platform for social challenges.

Data.world is aiming to advance the data philanthropy movement by helping public and private companies share data for the common good.

Insurance businessman and philanthropist Pat Ryan led the Series B funding for the two-year-old Austin, Tex., company. Chicago Ventures and Shasta Ventures joined the round.

One of the firm’s early clients, Data For Democracy, uses Data.world to share crime, campaign and election data among 700 data scientists studying election trends and government spending.

Data.world is a certified “B Corp” as well as a benefit corporation, meaning the company’s social mission is protected in its founding documents.
